The fourth season of the Chinatown night market will feature weekly markets for the first time, organizers say.
The market opens its summer season Wednesday, and for the rest of the month and through August 27 it will run on successive Wednesday nights at its location in the 500 block of Fisgard Street. The presenting sponsor is Union, a new residential development by Anthem Properties.
“There was a strong feeling in the community that the market should continue and we have been hearing since the beginning that people wanted to see the market happen more often,” said Tony Joe, chairman of the Victoria Chinatown Night Market.
“Historically, Victoria’s Chinatown is of monumental national significance and to be there when it comes alive at night with the night market is a really unique experience,” said Peter Edmonds, director of marketing at Anthem Properties. “Everyone involved has worked hard to expand the night market and make this year the best so far. We’re very proud to be a part of the team.”
In addition to cultural entertainment, vendors and a greater variety of Asian food choices, new elements will include graffiti artists and an emphasis on street-level entertainment.
Each evening will feature music, dance performances and other cultural demonstrations such as Kung Fu and Tai Chi. Favourite market vendors are returning along with many new ones for a vibrant Asian-style market.
Opening night will feature dance performances by Ocean Rain and Victoria Chinese Performing Arts and the Lion Dance by Wong Sheng Kung Fu Club. Demonstrations of Kung Fu and Tai Chi will also take place as well as at markets through the season.
Silk Road will be holding tea service demonstrations and sampling as well as Asian themed summer tea workshops on Chinatown market nights. Victoria Chinatown Lioness Club will host family crafts and activities at each market through the season. Details and updates are posted at www.chinatownnightmarket.ca and the Victoria Chinatown Night Market FaceBook Page.
